Road users will benefit following a successful bid for £875,000 to improve the safety of a road in Hastings.
Conservative-led East Sussex County Council has been awarded funding from the Government’s Safer Roads Fund (SRF) to implement safety improvements on a section of the A2101.
The scheme, which is the first Safer Roads Fund scheme in East Sussex, will deliver improvements at 15 locations from the junction with the A21 to Park Crescent.
The planned safety improvements include installing new pedestrian refuges, improved accessibility at existing refuges, high friction surfacing on the approach to a zebra crossing, and central hatching.
Conservative Cllr Keith Glazier (pictured), leader of East Sussex County Council, said:
“We are extremely pleased that part of the A2101 in Hastings has been selected by the Department of Transport to receive funding from the Government’s Safer Roads Fund. This money will be used to fund improvements which will lower traffic speed and improve pedestrian facilities, helping to make the road safer for all road users.”
The SRF is an innovative programme from the Department for Transport that provides funding for the most high-risk ‘A’ roads in England.
The allocation of SRF funding is based on analysis undertaken by the Road Safety Foundation which identifies the risk of being involved in a fatal or serious crash per billion vehicle-kilometres travelled on A-roads across the UK.
Following the funding award, the A2101 scheme will progress to the detailed design phase later this year, with construction expected to take place during 2025/26.
