To cries of 'God Save the King' the new monarch, King Charles III, was formally proclaimed in East Sussex today by the High Sheriff at County Hall. The proclamation is being made in towns throughout the county this afternoon after the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
County councillors joined dignitaries for the occasion.
A county proclamation of the new sovereign was made at 1pm outside the main reception of County Hall, St Anne’s Crescent, Lewes on Sunday 11 September.
Residents were invited to gather to hear the announcement which was made by the High Sheriff.
The tradition of the proclamation dates back many centuries to before modern communications when the local announcement was often the first time people learned of the accession of a new monarch.
In 2022, the proclamation offered an opportunity for the community to gather at this unique point in history as the reign of the longest-serving monarch of this country has ended and a new sovereignty has begun.
Local proclamations were then heard across the county from 1.30pm onwards.
