Conservative-led East Sussex is providing for war-torn refugees arriving in the county.
Almost half a million pounds of funding is being directed by Conservative-led East Sussex to assist Ukrainian refugees being given shelter.
The money will be directed via three support groups who, between them, will be able to provide support for the next 12 months across the county: Hastings Voluntary Action, Rother Voluntary Action and 3VA.
The decision was taken this week (24 May) when Conservative councillor Carl Maynard, the council’s Lead Member for Adult Social Care, approved plans to split £490,000 between the voluntary organisations working with refugees and their host families as part of the Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme.
“This is vital support and, given our rural nature, is to assist with transport, social interaction, forming groups for the refugees to meet, but also link in with the core communities in which they are placed”, said Cllr Maynard.
The meeting heard about the ‘fantastic’ response from East Sussex residents taking part in the scheme. Figures announced showed there were 704 known arrivals in East Sussex, staying in 307 properties, the majority (120) being in Wealden.
