The public are being invited to have their say on the next phase of an ambitious scheme to modernise and improve Eastbourne town centre under major investment by Conservative-run East Sussex.
A consultation into the pedestrianisation of Terminus Road, pedestrian improvements at Memorial Roundabout, and the relocation of part of the town centre ring road has began.
Open until Sunday, November 20, feedback from the consultation will help identify concerns and issues ahead of detailed designs being completed for phase 2b of the Eastbourne Town Centre Improvement Scheme.
Conservative Cllr Claire Dowling, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for transport and environment, said: “Our proposals will help create a safer, healthier and thriving town centre and support our efforts to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality. People can now see the positive impact the first phase of the scheme has had in the town and it’s important that we get the public’s feedback on the latest proposals before we progress with the planning process.”
Funding for the proposed pedestrianisation of Terminus Road from Seaside Road to Grand Parade has already been confirmed through Eastbourne Borough Council’s successful Levelling Up Fund Bid.
Work continues to identify funding to enhance the existing pedestrianised section of Terminus Road from Langney Road to Seaside Road, as well as the improvements at Memorial Roundabout and relocation of the Ring Road. The county council is keen to gather public feedback on these measures to enable to progress them at a later date.
As part of the consultation period, three drop-in consultation events will be held in the town centre, giving people a chance to ask the project team questions about the proposals. These include;
- Monday, October 24, between 10am and 4pm – Court Room, Eastbourne Town Hall, Grove Road
- Thursday, November 10, between 10am and 4pm – Gather Space, The Beacon
- Saturday, November 12, between 10am and 4pm – The Atrium, Enterprise Centre, Station Parade
Phase 2b follows Phase 1, which was completed in 2019 and included improvements around Eastbourne Railways Station, part of Terminus Road, Cornfield Road and Gildredge Road.
Work continues on Phase 2a, which includes seating, cycle parking, an extension to pedestrianised zones and changes to road layouts, and details will be shared with the public when finalised.
